Scan rows from top to bottom, counting how many beams are in each column of the row, and creating new beams from splitters. In my visualization, the color of a slot represents the # of beams it has. To get the total number for part 2, sum all beam values in the final row. For part 1, we can just count the number of splitters we hit along the way.
